Today, I wanted to share how you can play any Battle.Net games on Linux.
The reason I want to share that is because World of Warcraft is one of my favorite childhood game.
BLIZZARD DOESN’T SUPPORT LINUX
Unfortunately, as of right now, Blizzard, the company that does World of Warcraft, doesn’t seem to be supporting Linux users. They have versions for Windows and Mac, which are the most popular and obvious operating systems, but not Linux.
Some of their games are available on Steam, like Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2. I haven’t tested them, but by looking at protondb.com, you should be able to play them by using Steam Proton. But again, World of Warcraft still isn’t supported. Maybe Blizzard could add more of their games on Steam in the future, who knows?
So, if you want to play other Battle.net games like World of Warcraft, Star craft, Hearthstone, etc. on Linux, then we have to do a bunch of workarounds. Which is exactly what I’m going to show.
BATTLE.NET APP
First of all, the necessary application, Battle.net, isn’t available on Linux. To install it, we need to use Lutris. It is a platform that helps us to run applications and games on Linux.
Let’s install it on our computer. It is available on flathub and should be available in any app store.
Once Lutris is installed, we need to go to its website (lutris.net) and search for the Battle.Net application.
From this page, we can install it. By doing this, Lutris is going to help us install and run the Battle.net application using Wine.
By default, it will install it in your home Linux folder. Depending on your needs, set up the application according to your needs because the Battle.net app will install every game in the folder that you choose.
WORLD OF WARCRAFT
When Battle.Net is installed, we should be able to log in and use just like any operating system. Once logged in, we should be able to play any video game available in the application.
In my case, I wanted to install World of Warcraft, so I can simply install it like I would do on any other operating system.
Once the game is installed, we can launch it
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, I was able to log in and play World of Warcraft on Linus by installing the Battle.Net launcher using Lutris.
If you ever need to launch the Battle.Net application again, you can easily do it though the Lutris app. It can be a little bit annoying since we need a launcher to run a launcher, but Lutris makes it easier for us to use and manage Wine.
